The starting of breeding the Lady Gouldian Finch began just wanting to own one of the most beautiful birds I had ever seen. Then when I saw the lady gouldian finch in another color combination I had to have another one. The Lady Gouldian Finch is truly one of "The Jewels of the Bird World". Their beauty is one to be seen an usually to be had. They are easily kept in the home for pets and have a nice song to go with their beauty. We have been breeding The Lady Gouldian Finch for close to ten years now. The true beauty is one to be seen. It is not just the keeping of the bird but the preserving of the Lady Gouldian Finch itself. The wild Lady Gouldian Finch was listed on the endangered species list in 2000. The rugged inaccessible country that they occupy in Northern Australia makes it very hard to get an accurate observation and account of the last of the "WILD" Lady Gouldian Finch. There are said to be 10 different populations remaining and there are less than 250 birds remaining in each population. Because of their beauty the Lady Gouldian Finch is also of course in the danger of poachers. The Lady Gouldian Finch has adapted very well in captivity and loves the attention cf their owners. They can be found curiously watching you as you are preparing their food. To own one is to truly say you have had one of GOD's beautiful jewels.

Housing
It is very easy to house a single Lady Gouldian Finch or a pair in your home because they do not require a large amount of room. But they do need normal day light hours. Next to a window would allow them also too live like they would in a normal wild enviroment and experience the seasons of the year. Living in the South we are able to house our birds outside most of the year. They are not able to be exposed to extremely cold temperatures for long periods of time but do enjoy the outdoors also . Our birds are raised outdoors for hardiness and also for a naturally breeding direction from the sun. We do provide a heat source for our birds if the temperatures get below unusal limits. There are also other ways to house your lady gouldian finch. Some prefer to house them in large aviaries, breeding style cages, cabinet style cages and indoor/outdoor flight cages (where the birds can choose to be indoors or out.

Feeding
The lady gouldian finch eats a normal finch seed mix like most other finches. For breeding purposes we mix our own seed mix, Changing the mix as it would change in the wild. Providing a variety of proteins and seeds, that become available throughout the year.We feed our Lady Gouldian Finches depending on their season of the year. We have a different seed mix to provide for each time of the year.(Pre-breeding,Resting,Moult and Breeding) The food selection changes for the Lady Gouldian Finch in the wild so we also change it in their captivity. It is a necessity for them to be a vibrant beautiful bird and a proper parent.Their is enough stress in moulting that a diet change is a must. It could be like forgetting your rain coat and walking out in the rain. Your just all wet, cold and WET!! Mother nature provides different foods for the wild finch through out the year and also different levels of proteins for their special needs. The proteins and fats are higher or lower depending on the time of the year or season. In Australia the Lady Gouldians finches' natural breeding time is October through March. So your weather conditions and daylight hours depend on when your breeding season will occur for your Lady Gouldian Finch. You may also apply full spectrum sunlight's to control your birds seasons when housed indoors. This allows them to get the proper exposure to the natural vitiman absobtion they would receive from the sun.(Full Spectrum Sunlights at-sunalite.com) Allot of research and knowledge is required to play with the day light hours with the birds. You must also change it as slow for them as it is done for us. But the most important thing is to provide the nutrition needed during the time of their life. There are some excellent Lady Gouldian Books to researcha nd read. "A Guide to a Gouldian Finches and their mutations"-revised addition- by ABK Publications would give great knowledge of the Lady Gouldian Finch. We will add more info on feeding and breeding on another page as time allows.

Breeding
Breeding of the Lady Gouldian finch has said to be trying at times but with the needs attention one can succeed in the breeding of the Lady Gouldian Finch. If you are breeding for a certain the wild type Lady Gouldian finch you can house them in an aviary type setting. This does make it easier to only feed one cage of birds instead of one for each pair. We choose to breed our birds in individual pairs because we want to control the colors we want to produce. If you wish to develop a genetic base you must pair off your birds. Pairing of birds does not the allow the birds to naturally select their mate. But securing a genetic base when breeding for mutation colors it is a necessity. Much reward come when the juvenile Lady Gouldian finch began's to moult out and show you the beautiful plumage that they have been given.
